Students must apply to both the University and the Department of Biology. The departmental application is incorporated into the general UO online application. The online application requires payment of a $70 application fee for domestic applicants or a $90 application fee for international applicants using Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or personal check (e-check).
The application for Summer 2020 admission has closed. If you would like to still apply for Summer 2020 admission, please contact Leslie Coonrod (email@example.com). The application for Summer 2021 will open on September 1, 2020.
Please read the following instructions completely before attempting to complete the online application.
In order to complete the online application process, you must:
- Prepare a candidate’s statement.
In approximately 500 words, please describe any relevant scientific experience you have that makes you a strong candidate for this program. In addition to your academic qualifications, your statement should incorporate your potential strengths as an employee in industry and why you feel this program is a good fit for your career goals. You can do this in advance in another application program and then copy and paste it into the appropriate space on the form. You may also download the documents directly.
- Submit three letters of recommendation.
Request to have three letters of recommendation submitted on your behalf by faculty and/or supervisors. Though your recommenders will be notified by email that you have applied and requested a letter, it is up to you to ensure they have actually filled out the online recommendation form, so make sure they know to expect to hear from us.
- Submit your transcripts.
Upload unofficial copies directly to the application, including all undergraduate and graduate work. You will need to provide official transcripts if you are admitted and decide to attend, but unofficial copies are acceptable at this time.
- Apply for Summer Term.
The program begins summer term.
- Fill out the application for the appropriate major.
Very important. The majors are listed alphabetically under the College of Arts and Sciences. If you choose a general biology major, you will be applying to the PhD. or biology master’s program. Please choose the following from the drop-down menu: “Biology – Internship Master’s.”
- Take the TOEFL if you are a non-native speaker.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language is required for non-native speakers of English. Requests to waive the TOEFL requirement or for permission to be admitted with the intent to take the exam upon arrival will not be accommodated. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for admission to this program is 620 (105 for the new iBT version), which is higher than the University of Oregon minimum.We will also accept the IELTS in lieu of the TOEFL. Our minimum score requirement is 7.5.
